About the Libertarian Party of California

About the Libertarian Party

The Libertarian Party was founded in 1971 as a voice for those who believe in maximum individual freedom and minimal government interference.
We exist because the two major political parties have consistently expanded the size, scope, and cost of government — eroding personal liberty and placing more power in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats.

Why We Exist

Our country’s founding principles — individual liberty, free markets, and limited government — are under constant assault.
We exist to restore those principles and to challenge the idea that bigger government automatically means better solutions.
The Libertarian Party offers a home to voters who feel politically homeless: people who want both economic freedom and personal freedom.

What We Offer People

  • A principled alternative – We don’t change our core beliefs to win elections. Our platform is rooted in liberty and consistent across time.
  • Local and national representation – Libertarians run for office at every level, giving voters a chance to choose freedom on every ballot.
  • Policy solutions that work – From criminal justice reform to tax relief, from privacy protection to ending endless wars, our proposals respect both freedom and responsibility.
  • A movement that empowers you – The Libertarian Party is made up of everyday people who are tired of being told what to do by career politicians. We invite you to take ownership of your political future.
