Why You Should Run for Office

Disrupt the Status Quo. Plant the Seeds of Liberty.

California State Assembly chamber

California has become a one-party state where the status quo reigns unchallenged. The top-two primary system is engineered to preserve that grip, leaving voters with the same tired choices and shutting out real competition. But history proves that third parties are where bold ideas are born—civil rights, women’s suffrage, marriage equality—all started outside the establishment before politicians dared to touch them.

If Libertarians don’t step forward, those conversations never happen. By running, even against stacked odds, Libertarians can disrupt the status quo, put new ideas on the table, and remind Californians that freedom still has a voice. Every candidacy is a protest against politics-as-usual—and a seed for the future of liberty.

The Libertarian Contrast

Establishment politicians are chained to endless fundraising calls and donor scripts. Libertarians are not. That independence gives us something rare in politics: the freedom to be authentic, to speak plainly, and to put principles first.

If you’ve ever thought about running, ask yourself: what message will you bring? Lower taxes and simpler rules? Cutting red tape so entrepreneurs can thrive? Protecting privacy and personal freedom? Smarter budgets and real accountability?

You don’t have to do it alone. The Libertarian Party of California is ready to help—with financial forms, campaign advice, websites, literature, and more.

Libertarians Oppose Proposition 50

Governor Gavin Newsom

On November 4, 2025, California voters will face Proposition 50, a constitutional amendment that would suspend the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission and hand redistricting power back to the Legislature.

Make no mistake: this is political self-dealing at its worst. For over a decade, Californians have trusted a voter-approved citizens’ commission to keep maps transparent and fair. Proposition 50 would rip that away and put the foxes in charge of the henhouse.

🧨 Politicians will pick their voters. Maps will be drawn to protect incumbents and entrench one-party rule for years.

🗺️ Communities will be carved apart. Rural and urban areas with nothing in common could be jammed into the same districts, silencing local voices.

💸 Accountability will vanish. When elections are rigged by design, legislators answer to party bosses and donors—not to you.

🔁 They may never give it back. Prop 50 promises to “restore” the commission in 2030, but once politicians seize this power, why would they let it go?

This isn’t about fair maps—it’s about power, permanently shifted away from the people.

The Libertarian Party of California urges a resounding NO vote on Proposition 50.
