Proposition 16: Repeal of Proposition 209 Affirmative Action Amendment (1996)

Position: No

The Libertarian Party of California firmly opposes Proposition 16 and the discriminatory practices that it would implement. In 1996 the voters of California voted to end the state’s affirmative action policies when they approved Proposition 209. Proposition 16 would reinstate affirmative action’s discriminatory practices which would lead to quotas in hiring and admissions policies based on race, gender, sexual identity, etc. rather than having those decisions be based upon qualifications and meritocracy.
