Yolo County Libertarian Party

It Only Takes Perseverance

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men,
undergo the fatigue of supporting it.  ~Thomas Paine

The last time that I posted (02/2011) was at the inception of my effort to start a County Libertarian Party.  I began to organize our Party in Yolo County through our Meetup site.  At our first Meetup was Gale Morgan from Sacramento County, my wife and I.  Gale encouraged me not to get discouraged; it was only he and Art Tuma that met when they started their Meetups.  That was February 15, 2011.

Two months later Monico Castro came to visit.  Seven months after our Meetup began, Monico and I started having business meetings. Somewhere along this time providence favored us with a new member who moved from Nevada: Isabel Isherwood.  In less than a year, we we have elected three officers (Chairman, Vice-Chair and Treasurer) and appointed Mark Suarez, our Student Liaison at the University of California at Davis.

It has now been 14 months.  Our three officers all attended the State Convention and met many new friends of freedom, and now Isabel is going to be our delegate to the National Convention!  We have made initial attempts to man a table at the Davis Farmers’ Market.  We are hoping to have our first fund raising letter out soon to the registered Libertarians of Yolo County, and be a part of an effort to organize our regional executive committees into a coherent force.  Not a bad start, and anyone can do it.

We are only a small group of  average people with busy lives, but we believe that the Libertarian ideas of limited government and individual freedom are powerful ideas and self-evident to convince people, so I am committed to one simple idea: perseverance.

This is my guiding principle.  The pace may be slow, or fast;  The funding may be in nickels and dimes, or in hundreds and thousands of dollars;  The membership may be a handful, or hundreds of rabid activists.  I cannot predict the future.  But I am committed to one simple principle:  persevere.

There will always be varying levels of action, and I hope that there will always be many of us who can give much of “the three T’s” of our time, treasure and talent to the cause of Freedom.  Even so, every Libertarian in California can simply commitment to persevere in any measure of devotion to Freedom we will overcome the “fatigue of supporting it,” will surpass what any current Statist political party is currently able to do.

After being inactive for a time, I’ve been provided the opportunity to bring some life to the Yolo County website for the Libertarian Party. There are supposed to be about 500 registered Libertarians in the County, so I hope this becomes a place to meet, greet, and chat about things libertarian, and how the message of freedom can be broadcasted into our community.
