What It Is
"The Libertarian Perspective" is a weekly Op-Ed column syndicated by the Media Relations committee of the Libertarian Party of California. It is the product of a writers' bureau consisting of highly talented authors from all walks of life: professional writers and academicians to musicians and technologists. They hail from all corners of the state of California.
The one common thread connecting the writers is they all believe strongly in freedom and individual liberty. Rather than taking the oft cited view that the government is the solution to every problem, they believe that the way to greater civil harmony and economic prosperity is to empower the individuals in our society to make their own decisions; decisions on what they do with their time, how they spend the proceeds of their labor, who they associate with in politics, love, work and leisure; and many other facets of life currently relegated in ever increasing degrees to the State.
We guarantee that your readers will find the views of our panel challenging and provocative, in addition to being educated and well reasoned.
Format and Topics
"The Libertarian Perspective" is written in the style typical of Op-Ed articles: 700 to 750 words in length. They are professionally edited, with an eye towards the Associated Press Stylebook.
The authors, who rotate weekly, are given a high degree of latitude in selecting and presenting their topics, but are encouraged to write on issues of interest to the newspaper readers of California. Informed opinions on everything from art to economics, and from constitutional rights to corruption in politics may be featured, with an understandable over-weighting in issues of a controversial or political nature.
While the views presented may often align with those held by libertarians (whether active in party politics or not), the "Libertarian Perspective" is not intended to be an advertisement for the Libertarian Party. The goal is to present a position on a topical issue from an interesting freedom-oriented viewpoint in a general but nonpartisan way.
Distribution, Schedule and Cost
Columns are published every Monday.
Unless arranged otherwise with the project coordinator, distribution is made by email.
The column is distributed without charge to virtually all the newspapers in the state of California, and is posted on the Libertarian Party of California web site the same day as distributed.
Exclusivity within a media market is obviously not assured with this broadcast approach. However, a newspaper willing to commit to regular publication of "The Libertarian Perspective" can arrange by mutual agreement to be the exclusive print media recipient of our direct email distribution over its nominal geographical market area. Moreover, upon request, columns can be modified to address or focus on a specific geographic market. Interested editors and publishers should contact the project coordinator to make such arrangements.
